Cycle count

Counting a small part of the stock on a regular schedule, instead of counting everything at once.

What it means in business

In a cycle count, a few items or one bin are counted each day or week, so over a period everything is checked, and the most valuable or fast-moving items more often. Differences between the count and the records are investigated and corrected as they appear.

Example

Stores counts 20 items every day and counts the highest-value items every month. A difference on a bearing is traced to a receipt booked against the wrong code and fixed the same week. This is an illustration of normal business use rather than a quoted case study.

How to use it correctly

Pick the schedule by value and movement, count without looking at the book quantity, investigate every difference to find its cause and correct the record with an approval, so errors stop recurring.

Common confusion

A cycle count is not a replacement for a year-end physical check where one is required. And fixing the number without finding the cause just hides the problem.
