IEC

Importer Exporter Code: a 10-digit number issued by the DGFT that a business needs to import or export goods.

What it means in business

Most businesses that import or export need an IEC. It is applied for online with the DGFT, is linked to the business's PAN, and is quoted on shipping bills, bills of entry and export documents. Some small or one-off transactions have exemptions.

Example

A manufacturer that wants to start exporting applies for an IEC before it files its first shipping bill, and quotes the number on every export document from then on. This is an illustration of normal business use rather than a quoted case study.

How to use it correctly

Apply on the DGFT portal with the business's PAN and bank details, and keep the details current. Check whether the IEC needs to be updated or confirmed periodically under the current rules.

Common confusion

An IEC is not the same as a GSTIN or an Udyam number. It is specific to trade across borders. Having one does not by itself make you eligible for export incentives, which have their own conditions.
