Udyam registration
The online registration through which a business is recognised as a micro, small or medium enterprise in India.
What it means in business
Udyam registration is done on a government portal, without a fee, using the owner's Aadhaar and the business's PAN and GSTIN where it has them. It gives the business an Udyam Registration Number and a certificate. The enterprise class depends on its investment in plant and machinery and its turnover, and the limits are set by the government.
Example
A small manufacturer registers on the Udyam portal and gets a certificate. It uses the registration when applying for schemes and bank credit meant for small businesses, and quotes the number on its invoices to customers. This is an illustration of normal business use rather than a quoted case study.
How to use it correctly
Register only on the official portal, which does not charge. Keep the details, such as the activity and the investment and turnover figures, up to date. Use the Udyam number when applying for schemes and mention it to large customers.
Common confusion
Udyam registration is not the same as GST registration, though the two are linked. Registering does not give benefits by itself: each scheme has its own conditions. Sites that charge a fee for it are not the official portal.
