GSTR-1

The GST return in which a business reports its sales (outward supplies) for a period.

What it means in business

GSTR-1 lists the invoices you issued, credit and debit notes, and exports, with the tax on each. It is filed monthly, or quarterly by taxpayers who chose the quarterly scheme. What you report here flows into your customers' GST records, so it decides what credit they can claim.

Example

A distributor raises 400 invoices in a month. Before filing GSTR-1 it checks that every invoice has the buyer's correct GSTIN and place of supply, because a mistake shows up in the buyer's statement and leads to a call. This is an illustration of normal business use rather than a quoted case study.

How to use it correctly

Reconcile your sales register with the GSTR-1 summary before you file, and keep the filed copy with the month's books. File on time: the due dates are set by the government and can change, so confirm the current date on the GST portal.

Common confusion

GSTR-1 reports sales and does not pay tax. The tax is paid, and credit claimed, in GSTR-3B. The two must agree in substance, and differences between them are a common reason for notices.
