GSTR-3B
The GST return in which a business declares its tax for the period, claims credit and pays what is due.
What it means in business
GSTR-3B is a summary: total sales and tax on them, tax payable under reverse charge, the input tax credit you claim, and the cash or credit you use to pay. It is filed every month by most taxpayers, and the tax is paid before or with it.
Example
A plastics manufacturer's sales tax for the month is higher than its eligible credit, so it pays the difference in cash and files GSTR-3B. If the credit claimed is more than what GSTR-2B shows, the mismatch is visible to the department. This is an illustration of normal business use rather than a quoted case study.
How to use it correctly
Prepare it from reconciled books: sales from GSTR-1, credit from GSTR-2B after checking your purchase bills, and any reverse-charge purchases. Keep the working paper that shows how each figure was reached.
Common confusion
GSTR-3B is not a detailed return: it does not list invoices. Filing it late attracts interest on tax and a late fee even if the tax was paid, so a late return and a late payment are separate problems.
